GamerGrrl Sami Bess is a talented cosplayer, content creator, and streamer. She, like many other women and girls, has been gaming for years.
It’s a fulfilling hobby for her and many others share that sentiment. Despite this, the gaming community still holds a lot of negativity towards “gamer girls,” still have a bad rep in the gaming community. Being a woman, especially of a woman of color, amid this mindset can be challenging. Quirktastic’s GamerGrrl series wants to highlight this issue while talking about games that everyone can enjoy!
In this installment, we got to interview Sami Bess! She’s been making her own cosplays since 2010, many of which she designed herself. Sami also has a knack for making props. Her passion and creativity is clear in all of her work. Some of her most popular cosplays include Yoruichi from Bleach, Trunks from Dragon Ball Z, and much more!

Who are you and why do you consider yourself a GamerGrrl?
I’m Sami Bess, but I’m also known under my handle zerosuitsami! I’m a cosplayer, streamer, and k-pop fanatic! I consider myself a GamerGrrl because gaming was a huge part of my childhood. It was one of those pastimes that strengthened the bond between myself and my family. As I got older, gaming is still one of the major parts of my life that allows me to connect with people on so many levels.
Have you ever struggled with your identity as a gamer?
As a child, not at all. Gaming was such a huge part of how my family spent time together so there was no struggling with my identity then. I believe as I got older, and was more active on social media, I felt a shift. Especially as a streamer, I was exposed to so many stereotypes. I’m a person who is confident in their body, and doesn’t fit the status quo of a “real gamer.” It’s frustrating to have something that is a huge part of your life feel invalidated simply because of your gender and appearance.
You’re stranded on a desert island with only one console and one game – what do you pick and why?
I would have to say the Nintendo GameCube hands down. I have played some of my most memorable games on there (Animal Crossing, SSB Melee, Metroid Prime, etc.)! Also,’s got a handle…so that’s gonna be pretty nifty since I’m stranded. The game I would choose would be Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The story, the music, the gameplay is pure perfection. It is one of those nostalgic games that stand the test of time and can be passed down from generation to generation. No matter how many times I play it, it never feels stale.
What is your proudest gamer moment?
When I switched from console to PC!
What advice do you have for other GamerGrrls?
My advice for other GamerGrrls is to just to simply enjoy themselves and their experiences within gaming. Gaming is all about being inspired, creating memories with your friends! Never think it’s necessary to validate yourself to anyone! If you’re ever feeling stuck, just remember this: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start.
What game do you recommend for GamerGrrls?
I would recommend one of my favorite games of all time, Final Fantasy X. I’m sure many of you have either played it, or at least heard of it, but for the GamerGrrls who are just getting into gaming this is an RPG legend! If you love games with a rich story, incredible soundtrack, stunning character designs, and immersive environment this is IT sis. They actually just recently released the HD Remaster on the Switch, PC, PS4!
What are some of the highlights of this game? What are some things to look out for?
This is so hard to answer because the entire game is such a cinematic experience. A lot of the cutscenes are absolutely breathtaking. I will say that it tends to be a little grindy at times, but personally I do not mind that! I’m one of those players who love the rewarding feeling of that leveling grind. Speaking of leveling, the sphere grid system is not my cup of tea.
Did you have moments that stood out to you while playing?
There are two cut scenes that will forever give me chills and bring back memories of my childhood:
“This is it. This is your story. It all begins here.”

How does this game align with some of your own experiences?
I think we all can have some relation to the main protagonist, Tidus. A lot of the game focuses on his development as a person and the struggles of accepting the world as it is now, and also understanding it as it was.
Out of 10, what would you rate this game?
I rate it a solid 10/10. PURE ART.
