American Horror Story has been a staple for television since the genius mind of Ryan Murphy, one of the best show creators in my opinion, brought it to the screen. An anthology series that showcase horror in a new light I was hooked from Haunted House and definitely during Witch Coven’s (we will never forget how Auntie Angela slayed for us black witches!).
Freak show was admirable, Hotel was just plain weird, and eventually AHS began to lose my eyeballs until I was at home late one night and saw the promo for this current season AHS RedWood. Now, I (like most of us) am a big fan of any decades horror movie no matter how cheesy they maybe. So for me to see a vintage style aesthetic, hear 80’s throwback music, and forest scenery cabin I was immediately hooked! Here’s a few reasons why I’m tuned back into AHS and you should be too!
Suffice to say Jazzercise was all the rage in the 80’s, and you didn’t live if you weren’t in one of those classes. It was our present day Zumba, OrangeTheory Fitness, what have you, except you know…better looking clothes! Redwood jumps us back into the 80s era by introducing our main characters in this segment complete with great hair, rocking bods, and all the teenage raging hormones you could ever want.
Gas Station Attendant
We all know every horror movie involving a remote location – EVER- has a creepy attendant whose sole purpose it to tell our naive characters that they shouldn’t go where they carelessly are planning to. When our main characters stop at a gas station, and reveal they are going to be camp counselors at RedWood – our attendant cues his creepy line delivery about how they are all going to die and we’re off to the rest of the episode.
Candy and Diversity!
Simply put we all know the classic saying about black people and horror movies. Well, leave it to Ryan Murphy to challenge any stereotype especially in regards to minorities and TV. Ryan cast Angelica Ross, a.k.a Candy from Pose (separate article coming soon!), who plays a nurse in AHS Redwood with quippy lines that drop you right into a Cabin Fever movie. Hopefully, her character will last a bit long seeing as how if heads are about to roll, or at least a few limbs, you will need a badass nurse like her to keep you alive!
Micheal Myers Esque Escape!
RedWood has so many horror movie easter eggs that I am giddy with excitement! Its like Friday the 13th, and Chainsaw Massacre, meets Halloween especially considering the sequence in which our serial killer Mr.Jingles(…just watch the show) escapes on a dark and stormy night.
Its a bit convenient that he is able to find his way back to Redwood, trekking through pitch black forests, and on the exact same eve as when the camp (which has been shut down for years) is suppose to be open. But, that’s TV for you, especially campy, horror movie decade style TV- and I am eating it up.
With only two episodes in Redwood has proven to be a decent TV Show to jump start Halloween month! It successfully draws on the horror tropes of its predecessors, and that in itself is enough to keep me watching. But, will Redwood be enough to continue the AHS legacy?
Only time will tell but in the meantime – stay on the edge of your seat!
What's Your Reaction?
Hi! Asia Minor here - I enjoy anything history, fantasy, and sci fi...its even better when its all combined. I am working on acquiring beautiful huskies for my pets, constantly watching movies (and plan on making them), and reading/writing. My musical choices limit to Disney, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Lamar - enough said.
