Krypton (Sci-Fi Review)

Superman is one of the most recognizable superhero/comic book characters of all time. Even people who have never read one of his comics know of the big blue boy-scout. However Krypton is about a lesser known Superman story. The House of El.

Man of Steel (2013) went into Superman’s origin in great and dazzling detail by showing his parents and planets struggles. Never had so much detail gone into Krypton and it understandably left us wanting more. That’s where the new Syfy series Krypton comes in. The show gets its name from Superman’s birth planet, Krypton. Krypton explores the history of Superman’s family by telling the story of his Grandfather, Seg-El.  It is through Seg that we learn not all of Superman’s strength comes from the sun.

What I Loved

First off, I love the idea and theme of exploring Superman’s family and I absolutely love that we get to explore time travel in this show. Time travel has led to some of the best DC comic story-lines of all time. In the show Adam Strange (my second favorite DC time traveler only to Booster Gold) has to go back in time and get the help of Seg. Brainiac, one of Superman’s greatest villains, has also traveled back in time to end house El and prevent Superman from being born. This use of time travel is a great way to get a first person view of what exactly happened to the El family.

The black women are badass! There are two black women main characters in the show and what was most refreshing is that they are not background characters or props.

Did I also mention, they’re matriarchs of the house of Zod?!

Seg-El’s love interest Lyra-Zod (Georgina Campbell) is a tough but loving military soldier. She and Seg secretly see each due to her family’s higher class. Another black woman main character is her mother Jayna-Zod (Ann Ogbomo). Jayna is the head of the Kryptonian military and is not only intelligent but an amazing martial artist and fighter. Like her descendant General Dru-Zod protecting Krypton is of the utmost importance of her and she’ll do it no matter the cost.

The Visuals

Holy smokes! Visually this show is amazing. The beautiful images of the Sun and Kandoor City made me completely forgot that I was watching this show on SYFY.  I have loved the channel since I was a little girl but most of their movies look like they were shot with an old T-Mobile Sidekick. The budget for this show has to be high (I looked and it is) simply because of the special effects.  They are better than some of the recent movies that have come out.  That makes it worth a watch in itself.

What I Didn’t Like

This show suffers from a lot of what I simply call, “Where have I seen this before?” Our first introduction to present day main character Seg is in a bar fight. A few family insults and here we are. The introduction of the overly done bad boy because he’s in a bar fight cliche. I literally watched this scene and thought about Star Trek reboot where Chris Pine is fighting in the bar. It was almost exactly the same and unimpressive.

So much happens in the first episode and it all happens very fast. We go through 2 generations of El, multiple deaths, the introduction of several highly complex characters, and a lot of unanswered questions. I’m hoping that episode 2 expands more on some major questions. The only thing that worries me about that is the potential plot holes and forgotten characters that may arise.

Should You Watch It? Yes!

Overall I thought the show was amazing. It was a new and refreshing take on the mythos that is Superman. If you’re a big fan of his or not the show does its duty at being interesting, captivating and entertaining. I look forward to watching more episodes and seeing what else they have in store for one of my favorite superheroes.
