The Queen Is Here: What We Know About Ava DuVernay’s New Gods

With our major Geek behemoths ending this year, (GOT, Endgame, and Star Wars), a couple of things have been on the radar for all sci-fi, fantasy, and comic blerds alike. One notable project coming to theaters (that I am extremely excited about) is Ava DuVernay’s DC New Gods.

DC has already slated a slew of notable directors, live action projects – The Batman, Birds of Prey, and have already released Joker. So, bringing on Ava DuVernay to direct one of the most powerful superhero groups in comic lore is certainly a step in the right direction, and it’s great to see Black female directors being able to take charge in other genres!

Ava previous work includes Selma, the 13th, and A Wrinkle in Time, not to mention her work with Queen Bey, multi-million deals with Netflix and the list goes on! Everyone is excited to see what Ava DuVernay will bring to the screen with Jack Kirby’s saga, and below is what she’s already teased!

A little history, the New Gods has some of the most epic world building in the DC universe, as it hails from Jack Kirby’s Fourth World. The New Gods are super beings from two different planets, New Genesis and Apokolips (version of Hell). A note – Steppenwolf (from JL) hails from Apokolips but seeing as how he was taken care of at the end of Justice League it’s doubtful, he will show up in this version (but as the Marvel universe has shown us…. stranger things have happened). Ava DuVernay has taken to Twitter to release a still of potential characters who will be in her film!

This still shows New Genesis’ leader Highfather, sons Lightray, Orion, and Mister Miracle, as well as, wife Big Barda and Highfather’s advisor Metron. Darkseid, Apokolips leader (similar to how Hades is God of the Underworld) is theorized to make an appearance in this movie as the villain. He was supposed to be teased at the end of the Justice League but was ultimately dropped.

It’s still up in the air if he will make an appearance in New Gods, considering how this will be an extended universe, but two villains who have been reportedly confirmed are Granny Goodness and Female Furies.

This isn’t Granny Apple Smith – Granny Goodness was created by Jack Kirby in 1971, when she was ripped from her family and trained to be one of Darkseid’s most elite soldiers. She then grew to train and raise Darkseid’s infamous army, this includes Mister Miracle, who finally escaped to go the good side.

Granny Goodness also founded the epic all female team the Female Furies, who Big Barda was a part of, but she too left to be with Mister Miracle. So essentially, if this Granny is in the movie, she’s coming face to face with some previous comrades!

As far as hard details, New Gods is in such early development who knows which way the wind will blow. However, if Ava DuVernay was to stick with these two villains it would make for one juicy story, and couple that with her expertise in world building – New Gods will hopefully turn out to be one marvel of a movie!
